You are a canditate MEP: 2004-2009 - European Parliament strong commitments to disability rights
During the last five years the European Parliament has shown a strong commitment to disability issues and the disability movement is counting on future MEPs to continue to be vigorous advocates of disability rights by pushing the boundaries of EU action.
Between 2004 and 2009, the European Parliament has been instrumental in :
- the adoption of non-discrimination and accessibility principles in the general regulations of the Structural Funds representing a third of the EU budget,
- the adoption of legislation in the fields of air and rail transport, as well as telecommunications, all of which will make a real difference in the everyday lives of millions of disabled people.
- in 2007, a wide range of MEPs officially supported the European wide citizenship campaign “1million4disability” which collected more than 1.300.000 signatures in favour of comprehensive EU legislative measures combating all forms of discrimination in the lives of people with disabilities.
